How to Preserve Baseband, Jailbreak and Unlock iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G on iOS 4.2.1 Using PwnageTool 4.2 / Sn0wbreeze 2.2

As we reported earlier, both PwnageTool 4.2 for Mac and Sn0wbreeze 2.2 for Windows are now available which can preserve baseband, and jailbreak iPhone, iPad and iPod touch on iOS 4.2.1 firmware.

This new version of PwnageTool and Sn0wbreeze also incorporates kernel based GreenPois0n exploit, which means that you can now create untethered 4.2.1 custom firmware files without the upgraded baseband so that you can unlock with current version of Ultrasn0w.

Simply follow the step by step instructions in the video embedded below to create custom 4.2.1 IPSW file without the upgraded baseband to jailbreak your iOS device.

Once you are done with the jailbreak, you can unlock your iPhone 4, 3GS and 3G on the old baseband using Ultrasn0w 1.2.

NOTE: You can also use this with iPhones which are flashed on 06.15 baseband so you can restore with this CFW (custom firmware).

Download PwnageTool 4.2 for Mac
Download Sn0wbreeze 2.2 for Windows
Download iOS 4.2.1 for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Apple TV 2

How to Update Cydia in Background on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch

Unfortunately, Cydia still doesn’t support the native multitasking / backgrounding feature which Apple introduced with iOS 4.x last year. What this means is that Cydia updates are installed whenever you start the app, followed by those annoying “Reloading Data” screens.

Thanks to some SBSettings toggles, you can now update Cydia in the background while you check your email, or reply to an important text message, and then quickly go back to it when it is done with all the updates !

Note: You must install SBSettings from Cydia before installing the toggles mentioned below.

Debian Updater for SBSettings

Debian Updater is a toggle for SBSettings to update in background the package database reflecting your newest sources.list file. In other words, you can refresh your Cydia source list everywhere (on Springboard or lockscreen, or within any app), without launching Cydia app.

Aptupdate for SBSettings

This toggle updates and upgrades your Apt cache and packages in the background. All you have to do is to press the button and you are free to do something else while your phone updates.

SHAtter Exploit Will Also Jailbreak the New Apple TV !

After showing off the first demo of SHAtter exploit in action, MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev-Teamhas confirmed today that this new exploit which was found by pod2g, a former team member of the Chronic Dev-Team will also work on the new Apple TV 2010. Since Apple TV also runs on iOS 4.1 (official download link), it will be interesting to see what kind of “magical” stuff canjailbreaking community achieve here.

It’s looking like SHAtter is going to be the gift that keeps on giving. Even though the new AppleTV isn’t yet in people’s homes, the firmware is available on Apple’s normal public distribution servers and SHAtter has been used to decrypt its keys! The main filesystem (“Mojave8M89.K66OS”) key for 018-8609-066.dmg is:

31c700a852f1877c88efc05bc5c63e8c7f081c4cb28d024ed7f9b0dbc98c7e1406e499c6

If you’re familiar with vfdecrypt, you can use that key to decrypt the image and mount it. If you do so, feel free to use the comments section to discuss what you discover there :) (And of course, thanks @pod2g!)

AppleTV

Since it is a bootrom level exploit, Apple will have to patch it by releasing a revised version of the hardware once the exploit is public. Therefore you must get your iOS devices early in order to make sure you get the older exploitable hardware.

Those interested in *potential* AppleTV JBs, better to buy early! Remember iPhone3GS hardware was updated to fix JailBreak hole

New jailbreak tools are still being developed. We will of course let you know once they are ready for primetime use. Stay tuned for that! [via Dev-Team Blog]

GreenPois0n iOS 4.1 Jailbreak Release Seems Closer than Ever Before!

With the low-level SHAtter exploit scheduled to pwn all iOS devices for life soon, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that the iOS 4.1 jailbreak will go down in history as one of the most anticipated jailbreak tool releases ever. And it is now “seems” only a matter of days, not weeks, tillGreenPois0n tool is released.

gp_web11

Days? How can we say that?

pod2g

Well, today when @asendari asked SHAtter discoverer pod2g about how soon we should expect GreenPois0n, pod2g replied with a tweet that left us very excited:

Yes. Only a few days to go before we all get to jailbreak iPhone 4 / iPod touch 4G (and all previous iOS devices ever released).

However, hacker ClaytonBraasch then tweeted the following in reply to pod2g’s tweet:

Just because @pod2g said he thinks the release is more likely to be in days than weeks does NOT guarantee it will be. Still, be optimistic.

But then, just when we were losing hope…

Chronic Dev Team hacker p0sixninja posted a link to an all-new entry on The iPhone Wiki titled “SHAtter”. The article, without revealing too much, details how the SHAtter exploit works (with loads of technical jargon like fuzzer, AES engine, heap overflow, memory dumps and the like), who discovered it and who is actively working on it.

From The iPhone Wiki:

This is an unsigned code execution vulnerability that resides in DFU mode of the S5L8930 bootrom.

Uses of this exploit have already involved uploading a pwned iBSS/iBEC to provide access to the AES engine and to run custom ramdisks.

GreenPois0n is closer than ever folks! I’ll once again end this post requesting all you iPhone 4/ iPod touch 4G jailbreak-users to be patient!
